The message is simple but worth reinforcing: pleasant interactions will help 'wire' baby's brain correctly; other kinds (either negative or neglectful) will 'wire' it incorrectly.

As a parent, grandparent, caregiver, or simply a person concerned about the future, what can be done to ensure the healthy brain development of our children?

  • Read and talk to your infant from the day they are born.  Even though they cannot understand the words, it helps to create connections that from the foundation for learning.
  • Praise, love, and nurture your baby often so they feel safe.  A child's need for loving attention is just as important as their need for food.  This helps develop the section of the brain that deals with emotional stability.
  • Provide a predictable and responsive daycare setting.  In order for your child to form secure attachments, experts recommend no more than three caregivers during these years.
  • Hold your baby in ways that allow them to explore your face and to watch your expressions of delight.  Give them something interesting to look at while in their crib or on the floor.
  • Expose your baby to simple math concepts.  For example, explain basic concepts like the difference between few and many, and look for opportunities to sort and to match items.
